Real Colors AK

Estamos de vuelta! Esta vez con una review de las nuevas pinturas de AK Interactive. Si te preguntas que es eso que ha sacado AK y no pudiste estar en SMC Eindhoven 2017 (donde se presentó el producto), aquí podrás ver un poco más de que se trata. Vamos allá!

We are back on track! This time with a review from the new range of paints from AK Interactive. If you are asking yourself what is all the fuzz about the new paints and you didn’t attend the SMC Eindhoven 2017 this is your place. Let’s do this!

What is it? ¿Qué es?

Real Colors es un nuevo tipo de laca acrílica desarrollada por AK Interactive. Inicialmente el catalogo es de 114 colores pero se esperan más referencias en un futuro próximo. La pintura se presenta en botes (10ml) de cristal y plástico diseñados también por AK. Tienen una etiqueta con la referencia, nombre del color y muestra de color alrededor, y otra etiqueta del color y la referencia del mismo en la parte superior.

Real Colors is a new kind of acrylic lacquer developed for AK Interactive. Initially, the catalog has a range of 114 colors, but we expect more references in the near future. The paint is presented in a 10ml glass and plastic jar designed by AK itself. They have a label around the jar with the name, reference and sample of the paint, and another one on the top with the color and reference.

How are they? ¿Cómo son?

La densidad, cobertura y acabado de la pintura es bastante similar a las lacas de otras marcas. El acabado es muy mate y aerografiamos debidamente aplicando capas finas la superficie queda muy suave. Recomendamos usar un ratio “standard” para lacas de al menos 20% disolvente y 80% pintura igual que con otras lacas. Aunque siempre recomendamos una presión aproximada entre 0’7 y 1, en la pruebas que hemos hecho se puede aerografiar incluso hasta a 2.

The density, coverage, and finish of the paint is very similar to other brands lacquers. The finish is quite matt and if we spray it applying thin coats we will get a very smooth surface. We recommend using the “standard” ratio for lacquers of 20% thinner and 80% paint. Although we normally recommend spraying this kind of paint at a pressure between 0’7 and 1, we sprayed it with no problems at 2 in our tests.

La limpieza de la pintura también es muy simple y no tiende a “agarrarse” tanto a los componentes como lo hacen las acrílicas. Con solo unas cuantas gotas del mismo disolvente podremos limpiar bien el aerógrafo.

The cleaning of the paint, once we are done with the painting, is also quite easy. This paint doesn’t tend to grip to the components as much as the acrylic ones. Using the same thinner we can quickly clean the airbrush and get it ready for more spraying.

Thinner / Disolvente

Junto con las pinturas, AK ha sacado un nuevo Thinner polivalente. Entendemos que es una especie de Lacquer thinner que sirve tanto para diluir las pinturas Real Colors, como Tamiya, Gunze, etc. Siendo unos usuarios del Thinner de Gaianotes, y por lo que pudimos probar en el SMC17,  podemos decir que este huele bastante menos y funciona igual de bien. A demás del thinner específico, estas lacas se pueden diluir con los Lacquer Thinner de otras marcas. También sorprende lo bien que funciona con el disolvente acrílico de AK (AK712). En el vídeo a continuación podéis ver unos test que ha hecho AK de diluyentes con REAL COLORS.

Along with the paints, AK has also a new Multipurpose Thinner. We understand that is very similar to other Lacquer Thinners and we can use it either to dilute Real Colors or other lacquers like Tamiya or Gunze. We compared this thinner at the SMC with the other one we are currently using with lacquers (Gaianotes) and we must say that works as great at this one but it’s less smelly. Win-win. Plus, Real Colors can be diluted with all the others Lacquer Thinner you might already have. You can even use the AK Acrylic Thinner (AK712). In this video you can see a range of test AK has made to show you how versatile they are.

The Colors / Los Colores

Creemos que este es, sin ninguna duda, el punto clave de Real Colors. Para la gente que utiliza Tamiya o Gunze, puede ser difícil conseguir un determinado color, como por ejemplo los colores británicos. Mezclas de dos, tres y hasta cuatro colores con sus respectivas ratios para conseguir uno solo. Con los errores y consiguientes pérdidas de pintura si no se almacena el resultado en botes herméticos. ¿Qué hace diferente esta gama de las otras?. Pues justamente el hecho de haber desarrollado una buena cantidad de colores específicos para modelismo militar de diferentes ejércitos y épocas que eliminan la necesidad de mezclas. La gama, que empieza con 114 referencias se distribuye en 5 categorías:
- Clear / Barnices  9 referencias 
- Standard              22 referencias
- WWII                    55 referencias 
- Modern                28 referencias 
No solo se venden sueltas sino también en sets de 3 y 4 referencias. 21 sets nada menos entre WWII y modernos que quedan repartidos de esta forma:
- Alemanes     7 sets
- Británicos     5 sets
- USA                5 sets
- Soviéticos     2 sets
- IDF                 1 sets
- F. Árabes      1 sets
Es bastante probable que este número vaya creciendo a lo largo del año que viene aunque AK no ha dado más información al respecto.

We strongly believe that the color is the key point of all this range of new paints. The people that use Tamiya or Gunze paints might have problems getting some specific colors due the sometimes complex ratios and 3 or 4-color mixtures. We all know that in some cases it tends to lead in a frustrated attempt and lot of paint wasted in the process. So, what we think it makes this range different from other brands is the fact that they’ve developed a bunch of specific AFV colors from several conflicts and armies. The catalog starts with 114 references that we could sort in:
- Clear / Varnishes    9 references 
- Standard                  22 references
- WWII                        55 references 
- Modern                    28 references
But they also have sets of 3 or 4 references. 21 of them are already available at their webpage from WWII and Modern armies:
- German    7 sets
- British       5 sets
- USA           5 sets
- Russian     2 sets
- IDF            1 sets
- Arab A.     1 sets
It’s likely that AK will increase the number of references and sets during the next year still they haven’t said a word about that. 

The Experts / Los Expertos 
Es importante remarcar el tema de los colores, ya que AK querido que sean hasta 4 expertos en el tema para que aportaran su conocimiento en la formulación de los colores, y también en la investigación y escritura del libro que acompaña a estas pinturas. Desde luego no son cuatro desconocidos: Jürgen Kiroff, Przemyslw Skulski, Mike Starmer y Steven Zaloga. 

Es importante remarcar el tema de los colores, ya que AK querido que sean hasta 4 expertos en el tema para que aportaran su conocimiento en la formulación de los colores, y también en la investigación y escritura del libro que acompaña a estas pinturas. Desde luego no son cuatro desconocidos: Jürgen Kiroff, Przemyslw Skulski, Mike Starmer y Steven Zaloga.
